The Impossible State
The book is divided into seven chapters; the first chapter, "Introductions," describes "model Islamic rule" and delineates the boundaries of the concept of "model" as it will be used as a central concept in the book's overall thesis. The second chapter describes the modern state, the "model modern state," and defines the "formal characteristics" that represent the essential qualities of the modern state. It deconstructs these characteristics, while simultaneously acknowledging the concurrent changes and successive variations in the formation of that state.
