Primary forms of religious life
Durkheim, one of the pioneers of sociology and anthropology, developed "The Elementary Forms of Religious Life" as a general theory of religion by analyzing the simplest primitive religious institutions. He argues that religion is a system of interconnected beliefs and practices related to sacred things, and proposes a new conception of religion and social forces. This involves analyzing the simplest known religion to identify the elementary forms of religious life, the emergence of fundamental concepts in thought, and the reasons for believing they have a religious, and thus a social, origin. Durkheim concludes that religion is based on solid experience and that the conflict between religion and science concerns only the contemplative function of religion, and that abstract meaning is not confused with the general idea.
