Missing or America
Karl Rossman, a sixteen-year-old, whose poor parents had sent him away to America, stood on the ship's deck, which was slowing down as it entered New York harbor. He saw the Statue of Liberty, as if the sun's rays had suddenly intensified in lighting it, and as if the statue's sword-wielding arm had risen high in the last moments, while a free wind enveloped it. This novel, in particular, may open a new path to understanding Kafka, a path of simple, compassionate humanity, and the two great novels (The Trial and The Castle) may begin to influence, from here and on their own, without any explanation.
