From Marib to Mecca
Scholarly translations of a selection of the most prominent studies by Western anthropologists and travelers in Yemen on ancient pagan remnants persisting into the modern era. These studies combine fieldwork documentation of unknown popular practices, archaeological work through the study of inscriptions and artifacts, and comparison with Arab and Islamic heritage, in light of shared Semitic traditions. The phenomena studied varied between remnants of pagan rituals, annual celebrations, remnants of linguistic terms, religious ideas, and architectural structures, mirroring those found in Yemeni inscriptions and artifacts, as well as remnants of social and economic systems that influenced early Islam and remained alive in popular religiosity.
